Season Memory #3: Jamie Moyer

Baseball fans always held their respect for the weathered lefty, but this year was truly phenomenal for Jamie Moyer. Some questioned if the 47 year old still had enough gas to do well. Boy did he ever.

Sure, over the season he let up 20 HR's, as well as surpassing our late Robin Roberts for most career HR's allowed, but that's just a blemish in how well he performed this year and is more of a testament to his time. There are few players that can withstand the test of time in this era of baseball like he did. Take a look at some of the things he did this year:

  • Oldest pitcher to defeat the Yankees.
  • Eighth pitcher to start a game in four decades. (Accompanied with a shutout in each.)
  • Sixth oldest pitcher to start a game.
  • Oldest pitcher to throw a shutout.
Moyer performed no worse than most teams' 3rd or 4th starter and we had him battling out for our 5th slot in Spring Training. Sadly his season was cut short, but he has shown no indication of stopping. If he continued the pace he was at some of his numbers could have been better than Kendrick's or Blanton's. Before being added to the DL, Moyer was going strong with a 1.1 WHIP and 103 ER's. Blanton ended this season with a 1.4 WHIP and 202 ER's in about 9 or 10 more starts than Jamie.

Remarkable. His passion and talent for the game transcends our normal expectations and is a fine example of the love of baseball.
